AITOOW thinks that the simple explanation for why Comey was sacked is that he overplayed his hand? And it isn't becaue he was a showboat. He seemed to enjoy toying with both Presidential candidates. For what purpose I can't pinpoint. Job security? Autonomy? Amusement? Attention? In any case, I believe he started a pissing contest and lost. He made himself an example. An example of what you get when you meddle with the Commander In Chief and his "boys" and what he wants the "fake" news to be talking about. Do these politicos just not understand the mentality of a private sector don? And don't counter with a patriotism/bipartisan truth seeker defense. You don't get as far as he did if you have a clear conscience or excess of morality.
And while we are discussing current events, why were people surprised at the current admins supposedly "frosty" meetings with European "allies"? Does no one remember the "new Europe" v "old Europe" debates from the Bush years (as far back as Nixon per my reading - probably longer)? Europe's tribal/statist mentality has always been at odds with the American (now just the Right) idea of individual supremacy. Relations with the Continent (minus those who suffered behind the Iron Curtain) will always be lukewarm when a Republican/defender of individual rights is in charge.
